2000 YEARS OF HISTORY IN THE LANDES

d

52 av. J.-C.

In Gallo-Roman times

TURSAN & CHALOSSE wines were among the wines admitted to the table of the Emperors.

Ve centurie

During the middle Ages

We find TURSAN wines in the great Spanish cities such as Seville, Valencia and Cordoba. Also in England and Flanders. The barrels were transported by barges (Gabares with flat bottom) on the river Adour to the Atlantic coast where they were loaded on merchant ships. In TURSAN area many Abbeys testify to the dynamism of the monks, especially in GEAUNE village with its “Bastide” and its tower.

d

15th centurie

In the 15th & 16th centuries

The departure of the English destabilized the trade. Also during this period of rigor alcoholic beverages, in 1577, King Henry decreed the uprooting of surplus vineyards. Henry IV would later overturn his authoritarian measure upon the advent of his reign in 1589.

17th century

In the 17th century

The TURSAN wines reached their peak. Varied grape varieties and large vineyards areas energize the vineyard: The Gabares then perform an incessant come & go on the Adour River.

d

19th centurie

In the 19th century

From the phylloxera crisis until the middle of the 20th century, the vineyards have been going thought period of doubt. The modernization of the winemaking structures was called for, and in 1958 was created the “CAVE COOPERATIVE Les VIGNERONS LANDAIS TURSAN & CHALOSSE”. This renewal begins a new “Boom” that has not been denied since! Today the AOP TURSAN covers an area of more than 500 ha in the Pyrenean foothills. South exposures, on steep slopes with tormented reliefs extend the noble “Terres du Tursan”.

A unique terroir

The TURSAN wine vineyard has an AOP. It stretches in the curves of the river Adour and on the first foothills of the Pyrénées.
The vines grow on 4 types of soil: Clay-limestones, Tawny sands, Pebbles, Silt and Gravels.

Available in 3 colors, TURSAN wines accompany the farandole of dishes.
Full-bodied, red wines can be served around 16° while white and rosé can be tasted around 10°.

The red wines make waltz their dark colors and their flavors of crunchy red fruits.
The rosés wines display their roundness and their tangy notes of redcurrants.
The white wines play the citrus fruit card and bask in the mouth with finesse and liveliness…

A selection of grape variety

Main red & rosé grapes

Tannat

Tannat is a central element of our wines, originating of the “Adour Bassin” area. It brings richness and structure to the blends. Formerly intended only to produce highly concentrated wines that require long aging to flourish, we know today, thanks to progress in cultivation and oenological techniques, to produce suppler, intensely fruity and very balanced wines.

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet franc originates from the Oceanic part of the Pyrenees. While is less tannic and colorful than Cabernet Sauvignon, it is nevertheless earlier and has adapted quite well to cool terroirs and tawny sands. Fully expressed in rosé & red wines.

Cabernet-Sauvignon

When tasting, it can be recognized by its marked blackcurrant flavors, but winemakers in the southwest France also speak of a “Wild taste”, no doubt attributable to its leather tones.

Fer Servadou

It stands out for its deep color and late-ripening berries whose blackcurrant aromas sometimes evoke those of Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a beautiful structure and a nice crunchy fruitiness.

Merlot

Recently reintroduced in the TURSAN vineyard, it bring roundness, fruit and suppleness.

Main white grapes

Petit Manseng

It is able to develop high sugar content while retaining significant acidity, necessary for the balance of our best sweet wines.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon white is planted in the southwestern vineyard with oceanic influence where it’s very intense aromatic characteristic are perfectly expressed. In addition to its aromas it brings liveliness to its blend. Its small clusters, made up of small berries, are susceptible to powdery mildew and rot in wet years.

Gros Manseng

A white grape native to the Pyrenean Piedmont, it is cultivated in the Southwest of France where it gives dry white wines its aromas and freshness, but can also give sweet, tart & fresh wines!

Baroque

This local variety is the backbone of the white wines of the Tursan AOP. Although it is now almost exclusively cultivated in “Les Landes” Dpt, it was once known throughout the Southwest of France. It gives lively, fresh and aromatic wines with finely floral notes.

Other grapes varieties present in our vineyard: ARRILOBA, CHENIN, CLAVERIE, COLOMBARD, EGIODOLLA, SYRAH… But in small areas.
